Dentures are a way for people to replace missing teeth.
A denture will not last forever. Your mouth is continuously changing. This happens gradually over time and a lot of people adapt to these changes. When you lose your teeth your jaw bone shrinks and as you get older these changes occur faster. Prolonged use of ill-fitting dentures can lead to increased bone loss and this can make it harder to get fit for new dentures.
Some signs your dentures are not fitting properly are:
- pain or continuous sore spots
- slurred speech
- clicking or whistling
- slipping of your denture
Also, when your teeth wear down you are not chewing properly, therefore not digesting it properly. With regular visits to your denturist they can observe these changes and recommend relines and new dentures as needed. On average people need relines every 2 to 3 years and new dentures every 5 to 7 years.
At Keith Shrum Dentistry we provide complete denture services in house to ensure you get the dentures you need with a fit that you are comfortable with.
A removable partial denture is a denture that replaces 1 or more missing teeth. Teeth are placed on a metal framework and uses clasps to secure fit.
Reasons for needing a partial denture:
- they prevent other teeth from drifting
- stabilize your upper denture
A complete denture is for patients who are missing all their natural teeth on the top or bottom or both.
These are made from taking basic measurements and movements of your mouth. Fewer appointments are needed. We use a high quality denture tooth and acrylic.
